This was not at all the film I was expecting to see. None of the schmaltz I thought would be on screen. I have never read the book so I saw this film virtually blind.
I thought this was an excellent film. I cannot say the subject matter is enjoyable in the slightest but it was really well done. The acting was impeccable from all concerned. Thewlis played his part to perfection. I was very impressed.
This was a much harsher story than the one's I'm used to finding for children. Obviously the subject matter cannot be told in a flowery fashion and this doesn't pull any punches. I realise that in actuality this story could never have occurred. The story however does a great job at introducing young people to a horrendous subject. I saw it as a kind of 'Fox and Hound' of WWII.
I have heard criticism that the camp is not depicted as badly as it truly was. I doubt there ever has been a film that could depict this. Even the newsreels shot upon liberation could not conjure up the full pain, suffering and evil present there. The film certainly gets enough in to get it's point across.
This film was much harder hitting than I expected. A film that shows the best of British action and production. A film I wholeheartedly recommend. A worthy addition to films such as The Pianist and Schindler's List.

Good review, I was in two minds about seeing this film but you've convinced me suitably. I heard that it was considered a fable, and like your comparison of the Fox and the Hound.
